Poyang, China's largest freshwater lake, becomes one of the world's great winter bird grounds: from October to March over half a million waterbirds — including 98% of the planet's Siberian cranes — gather on its shrinking shoals. The top sites are Wucheng town's lakes (Dahuchi, Shahu) in the Yongxiu reserve and the Nanji Wetland islands; January delivers the densest flocks. Bring a 20× scope or binoculars (we arrange guided outings with scopes), muted clothing and patience at dawn hides. A comfortable day leaves Nanchang at 7 a.m., reaches hides before first light, returns by dusk, and pairs well with a Nanchang city tour the next day. Outside bird season, lotus seas and fishing-village lunches are the draw.
