Wuyuan in northeast Jiangxi is the heartland of Hui culture: white-walled, black-tiled villages tucked into rapeseed fields and ancient camphor forests. Every season paints a different picture, from golden spring fields to the famous "shaiqiu" autumn crop-drying on rooftops.
Must-See Sights
Huangling (the iconic rooftop crop-drying village, reached by cable car), Jiangwan (a masterpiece of Hui architecture), Likeng ("small bridges over flowing water"), Moon Bay viewpoint and Sixi-Yancun.
Best Time to Visit
Mid-March to early April for rapeseed flowers; late November for vivid shaiqiu colours. Spring and autumn are peak photography seasons, so book accommodation early.
Getting There
High-speed trains stop at Wuyuan station. The all-inclusive scenic pass is RMB 210 and the Huangling round-trip cable car RMB 120. Two days with a night in a Hui-style guesthouse is ideal.
