Wugong Mountain on the Jiangxi-Hunan border is a backpacker legend: 100,000 hectares of rolling alpine meadow above the clouds, strung with tent camps along a ridge trail. The classic 2-day trek climbs from the Longshan (or Jinding) cable car, crosses Jinding (Golden Summit, 1,918 m) and descends at Fayunjie, roughly 6–7 hours of hiking per day at altitude; a halfway inn or summit tent lets you catch sunrise over a sea of clouds. A reasonable fitness level and trekking poles are required; take 2 L of water, windproof layers (summit nights drop below 10°C even in May) and a power bank. We arrange guided small groups with porters, tent booking and weather contingency, or a relaxed cable-car day version for families.
