While eastern China's plains bake above 35°C in July and August, Guling town on Mount Lu averages 22°C — which is why it has been China's favourite mountain summer retreat for over a century.

Getting up and staying over

High-speed trains stop at Jiujiang or Lushan stations; the modern cable car sweeps you up to Guling in minutes. Spend at least one night on top: sunrise over Hanpo Pass and evening walks through the cloud-wrapped European-style villa district are the real magic. Summit hotels range from cosy 3-diamond inns to five-star resorts — book July and August rooms two to three weeks early.

What to do

Walk the gentle west line (Ruqin Lake, Flower Path, Brocade Valley), then the more dramatic east line (Five Old Men Peak, Three-step Waterfalls). Families love the botanical garden and old-villa museums; photographers should chase dawn at Hanpo Pass and dusk over Poyang Lake.

Packing & health

Summit evenings feel like autumn — carry a jacket even in August. Rain showers are common, so pack a light rain shell and non-slip shoes. Senior travellers can skip steep sections using optional cable chairs; our Lushan Wellness 5-Day program adds rest hours and medical backup.

For a longer cool-climate trip, pair Lushan with Huangshan — both summits stay in the low twenties, and the HSR link via Jingdezhen is easy.
